Fusion for Energy

Human resources through 2D animation

The Briefing

Fusion for Energy (F4E) is the European Union organization managing Europe’s contribution to ITER— the biggest scientific experiment on the path to fusion energy. Like many organizations, F4E has to communicate regularly with its employees on HR-related topics: how to apply for a promotion, where to find HR information on the intranet or, a more sensitive subject, what resources are available in terms of mental health within the company.

The story we wanted to tell

We’ve created a series of characters evolving in a graphic universe based on F4E’s guidelines. These different characters illustrate the diversity present within the organization. We depict them in different situations, using numerous visual metaphors to help us convey sometimes highly conceptual topics.

We wanted to create a graphic universe that was both modern and dynamic, and that would appeal to the widest possible audience.

Athéna de Callataÿ, Head of Motion Design.

Creative process

We’ve created a particular style for the characters: they’re slightly disproportionate, which gives the series a distinctive identity. The environment is both spare and simple, allowing us to reduce production times. To avoid being too didactic and literal, we’ve injected a touch of poetry into various scenes, using metaphors. These allow us to illustrate complex and sensitive notions, such as depression, with a simple, impactful visual: localized rain falling on the character.

Broadcast

The films are used on the company’s internal distribution platforms. They have been used both to inform, but also to communicate the availability of reference persons or more substantial documents available in F4E’s human resources database.
